Although the PAF pickup as we know it today has adjustable pole screws, the original design and original prototype PAF's had no adjustable pole screws. With the ThroBak DS-55 double slug bobbin, Patent Prototype pickups you can now discover the tones that inspired Ted McCarty to green light the PAF humbucker!

The ThroBak DS-55 sees through the original design beyond the prototype stage to a final production version of the double slug bobbin PAF humbucker design. By taking design cues from the existing prototype pickups, and the final production PAF, we combined key details to create a new pickup from the ground up. The original prototype PAF's were made from modified P-90's, reworked to prove the new concept. P-90 details like long A3 and A4 magnets, large P-90 flat head bobbin mounting screws and P-90 winding pattern impact the tone by giving the DS-55 it's unique inductance signature. Square cornered Nickel Silver covers, Butyrate bobbins and internal ground baseplates mirror the classic P.A.F. design. Finally a newly designed no hole, short leg Nickel Silver baseplate allows the DS-55 to be installed in any humbucker routed guitar.

Coils wound with vintage, Kalamazoo-era winding machine for unsurpassed vintage winding accuracy.

42 AWG Plain Enamel wire and vintage 1955 winding pattern.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage Butyrate bobbins, Made in USA.

ThroBak custom made short leg Nickel Silver baseplates, Made in USA.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage PAF style no hole covers with standard buffed raw Nickel Silver finish, Made in USA.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage PAF style vintage alloy pole slugs, Made in USA.

Vintage formulation long Alnico 3 and Alnico 4 custom magnets, Made in USA.

P-90 steel mounting configuration.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0343/4368/2183/products/throbak-parts-guitar-pickups-throbak-ds-55-mxv-p-a-f-humbucker-set-nickel-ds-55-nk-set-27997060399239.jpg?v=1646880071
throbak-pg-102-mxv-peter-green-style-paf-humbucker-1570581
ThroBak PG-102 MXV Peter Green Style PAF Humbucker Pickup Set Aged Nickel
Please Note: Uninstalled from a guitar. Players like Angus Young of AC/DC, Jimmy Page and B.B. King have made some of their most iconic live and studio recordings with the early '70's vintage Patent Sticker T-Top pickup. Guitars with these early Patent Sticker T-Tops were built for a short period, but the timeless tones they created changed rock and blues history. You can hear these early T-top tones in AC/DC recordings from "Let There Be Rock" through "Highway to Hell" and beyond. Jimmy Page in the "Song Remains The Same" and B.B. King "Live In Africa" also showcase the power, warmth and nuance of these early vintage T-Top pickups. Now you can capture those same tones in your guitar with the ThroBak '70/Select T-Top replica electric guitar pickups.

ThroBak '70/Select pickups are sought out by fans of the elusive early '70's T-Top sound. The ThroBak '70/Select set has become the definitive choice for players seeking the tone of 1970 Gibson SG's with the “Made In USA” stamp, the guitar and year favored by Angus Young of AC/DC for decades. Fans of Jimmy Page's double black T-Top bridge tones also need look no further than the ThroBak '70/Select set. Not all T-top's were created equal and at ThroBak we know why and we applied this knowledge in the creation of the '70/Select set.

We started research by dissecting and analyzing the pickups from ThroBak’s own 1970, “Made In USA” stamped SG and two early Patent Sticker T-Top pickups from and ES-335. Analysis of the magnets, coils and winding pattern revealed the key details that make these pickups tonally unique in the timeline of T-Top production. Details like short A2 magnets, higher resistance readings than the typical T-Top, and winding materials and processes are precisely matched by ThroBak. The result is a 100% USA Made ThroBak re-creation wound with the same ME-301 machine model that wound the Kalamazoo originals.

Specs:

Coils wound with vintage, Kalamazoo-era Meteor ME-301 winder for unsurpassed vintage winding accuracy.

42 AWG red Poly wire duplicates rarest late Pre-T specs.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage™ PAF clone Butyrate bobbins, Made in USA.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage™ PAF style baseplates, Made in USA.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage™ PAF style covers, Made in USA.

ThroBak Maximum Vintage™ PAF style vintage alloy pole screws and slugs
Made in USA.

Vintage formulation Alnico 2 magnets custom Made in USA.

Vintage correct braided wire. Wound on the very KZ/LP-115 winding machine Gibson used for both PAF humbuckers and P90 pickups in 1957 and rescued from Kalamazoo by none other than Les Paul himself before Gibson's move to Nashville. ThroBak KZ-115 PAF pickups awaken the elusive early PAF pickup dynamics and low end depth of the originals. The KZ-115 owes its distinct tone to the custom Gibson Kalamazoo winding fixtures, wire guides and set-up of the original vintage winder. The original, non adjustable, 1950's lobeless cam traverse and limiting fixtures, wind what we call the KZ-115 vintage center focused coil. These center focused coils create a fuller bobbin for the same number of turns than coils wound on the other known PAF winders, the Leesona 102, Slug 101 and ME-301. The result is a PAF pickup reproduction with added scatter for a woolly low end and crispy/crunchy mids.
